CRYC hosted a joint a Comet and Laser Spring Regatta on Sunday May 6th. We had 7 comets and 14 lasers and help from quite a few volunteers to make this a fun and successful day for all. The winds were light and shifty, which presented problems for race management, but they successfully managed to complete two races. It was a beautiful, warm, and sunny day but a dying easterly breeze fighting against the evolving thermal within the Corsica resulted in too unstable conditions to run a 3rd race. The lead comets ended the day in a 4-way tie for first place with a 5-1 (Stoney & Sam), 2-4 (Wick & Betsy), 4-2 (Reed & Pam), and 3-3 (Andy & Mathew) combinations of finishes. With the tie breaker rules, Stoney won the day, Reed/Pam took 2nd, Wick took 3rd, and I rounded out 4th. Getting back to shore by 2pm, Craig, Michael, and Sarah Wooters already had the grill going and cooking burgers and dogs. With plenty of food and drinks, everyone enjoyed the remainder of the day talking about the tactics and strategies used during the races to include a abnormally strong ebb tide present during the racing. Must have been the "Super Moon". Everyone is looking forward to a great Comet season.

On Saturday and Sunday, June 23-24, Comets gathered at SSYC for the 2012 North American Championship Regatta. Competitors traveled from many distant clubs such as Eastern Shore, MD, Harrisburg, PA, Green Pond, NJ, and Bermuda to participate in this sixteen boat event. Winds were light and variable out of the northwest on the first day, which made wind shift reading and anticipation an essential skill for success. After the five races first day of racing (and one drop), only one point separated the first two boats.
The air on Sunday was slow to pick-up. As a result, the boats were held ashore in postponement until almost noon. The air finally came in from the east with a persistent shift through the day to the south. Three races were sailed that day to complete the two-day seven race series. The Olympic courses set by Jeff Jacobi, the PRO, and race committee/rescue boat team, were outstanding. Many thanks for their support of the regatta.
Consistent sailing by Rudy Bailey and Jessica Gruskos with finishes of 1-3-1-3-1-1-1 secured the regatta championship. Second and third place honors were awarded to Talbott and Lee Ingram and Wick Dudley and Gabby Neubelt, respectively.
In addition to the fantastic sailing on the water, on shore activities also made this regatta a memorable event. On Friday evening the Munger’s hosted an elegant dinner for the local and arriving Comet sailors. Many thanks to Pete and Georgi for this excellent meal. Lunches were coordinated by Ainsley VW Hilfiker and Wendy Kaplan and served by Anita Waters, Liz Miltenberger, and Bev VanWinkle. The Saturday night dinner, which was open to club members all race competitors, was over the top in terms of quality and quantity of food. Lynn Estrada worked closely with Sickles Market to provide an outstanding meal that is still being talked about! Thanks once again to all the competitors for attending the event and to the SSYC club members for pulling out all the stops and delivering a great race weekend for the Comet class.

Eleven teams of sailors convened at the Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club on September 22 for the 2012 Drew Bowl. With a 4PM high tide, the first race started at 1PM, which also enabled the wind to build. Early in the morning the air was relatively light; in the 6-8 knot range. After finishing lunch, as the boats started to launch, the wind velocity quickly built to the 15 knot range out of the southeast. During the half mile sail across the Shrewsbury to the starting line the wind continued to build and several boats decided to retire- at least for the first race.
Eventually, the first race started with only five boats on the race course. The race committee elected to sail two triangles in lieu of an Olympic course to avoid the risk of sailing deep angles. The air during this race was variable with gusts in the 20+ knot range. These conditions made for planning conditions and very careful gybes. Talbott and Lee Ingram took the first race, with Stuart Van Winkle and his sister Ainsley Hilfiker taking second with Jim Brinkman and Dominique Neubelt in third.
Five boats competed in the second race facing similar wind conditions. Thankfully the race committee shortened the legs a bit for this second race, which made the beats more bearable. On the first gybe mark, Stuart Van Winkle’s mast inverted and in trying to resolve the inversion, buckled the mast at the deck. In addition, on that same leg Richard Labossiere capsized on the planning leg after his rudder split in half, which occupied the safety boat resources for the remainder of the race. At the finish, Team Ingram took a second bullet, Team O’Brien took second, and the Brinkman/D. Neubelt Team took third. The third race was cancelled due to a lack of safety boat resources. The final regatta standings followed the second race results with the Ingram’s winning the regatta, the O’Brien’s taking second, and Jim Brinkman and Dominique Neubelt taking third.

Pumpkin Bowl, Severn Sailing Association

Due to construction conflicts at SSA this Season , it was decided to sail the Pumpkin Bowl at Corsica River on October 27th. Severn Comets sailed with Talbott and Lee Ingram and Larry Suter attending from Shrewsbury and Mattituck Fleets respectively. Considering Hurricane Sandy was approaching their areas of the Country within 30 hours, we were pleasantly surprised to see them arrive.
Five races were sailed. After three races it looked like Elliott Oldak and Barbara Best were on their way to victory. But Talbott and Lee would have none of that, fighting back with high finishes, while Elliott and Barbara slipped off the pace in the last two races. Talbott and Lee won the Pumpkin Bowl (his first time, believe it or not!), Elliott and Barbara won the second place tie with Larry Suter sailing his pretty wooden boat.
Commodore Andy Wood, Wick Dudley and Sandy Downes did a excellent job of organizing the racing with short notice.
